A fire on the side of the I-15 between Gopher Canyon and Deer Springs road halted traffic on Monday morning. The blaze, which was first reported around 9:30 a.m., covered about 12 acres of brush on the west side of the freeway.

The California Highway Patrol responded by shutting down three lanes of southbound traffic, and Cal Fire stopped the spread of the fire by 11 a.m. However, traffic was soon backed up for miles. Commuters as far away as Temecula were affected by the lane closure for much of Monday afternoon.

The blaze was close to the Lawrence Welk Resort, obscuring the air with haze and the smell of smoke, but no area structures were threatened.
