Girls win, boys take second for VC in cross-country Mustang Invite

The Valley Center cross-country teams traveled to Rohr Park on Friday to compete in the 15th annual Mustang Invite, and the Jaguars were outstanding in a pair of top-two finishes at the varsity level.

The Jaguars competed in the small school division and placed high in all four races, including a win for the girls varsity team and a runner-up finish for the boys varsity squad.

The Lady Jaguars varsity team took first out of 13 teams, as Helen Lopez led the way with a third place finish. April Lackpour was eighth, Danielle Pettit was 12th, Riley McCarrick was 14th, Delaney Cummings was 31st, Hailie Santana was 35th and Hannah Boyd was 58th out of 100 runners.

The Jags varsity team also raced well to place second out of 16 teams. In a race of 113 runners, Bannon Greer was the race winner, Rod Rodriguez was second and Fernando Ramirez was third. Sam McCuskey placed 13th, Thomas Stehly was 26th, and Nick Mendoza was 27th.

The boys JV team placed second out of 15 teams and 205 runners. Austin Reser led the way in fourth place, while AJ Monzon was eighth, Daniel Zorrilla was tenth, Jonathan Glassell was 16th and Charles Morningstar was 29th.

Valley Center finished the day off with the JV girls placing fifth out of ten teams. Reese Henderson placed tenth out of 196 runners, while Jasmine Contreras was 18th, Savanna Reilly was 31st and Charlotte Connell was 39th.

“Overall it was one of our strongest showings ever at The Mustang Invite,” said a proud coach Mike Cummings after the event.

Up next for the cross-country team is a trip to Morley Field for the Mt. Carmel Invite on Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
