As a tough season starts to wind down toward the playoffs, the Valley Center varsity girls volleyball team got a spark from a win against a longtime rival, and turned that spark into a good run through the SoCal Tournament this week.

The Lady Jaguars traveled down the hill to take on Orange Glen last Wednesday and, despite a bit of a slow start, went on to sweep the Lady Patriots 3–0 with game scores of 25–21, 25–11, 25–9.

Orange Glen was able to hang in there for most of the first game, but after allowing the Lady Patriots to pull within one at 22–21, the Lady Jags rattled off three consecutive points to put the first game away.

Valley Center briefly trailed at the beginning of game two, but after pulling ahead 8–7 early on, they never trailed again in taking the final two games for the match victory.

“We all had our moments, but we all played well,” head coach Bill Dunckel said after the match. “We mixed up the lineup a little bit and the team did well. Orange Glen isn’t a major threat, but we passed the ball well. The key for us is to get our serves in, connect our passes and hit the ball hard. We’re not tricky, we’re not fancy, but if we can pass the ball, hit the ball hard and cover on defense, we’re going to play well.”

The Lady Jaguars started out the SoCal Tournament on a sour note with a pair of losses, falling 2–1 to La Sierra (Riverside) and losing 2–0 to San Dieguito Academy.

But they bounced back for three straight wins, downing Southwest 2–1, beating Brawley 2–0 and defeating Mira Mesa 2–0.

The Lady Jags followed the wins with a 2¬–0 loss to San Pasqual, but rounded out the tournament with a 2–0 win over Mater Dei.

Thus far on the season, Jen Casillas leads the team with 270 kills and 22 aces, and she’s among the team leaders with 24 blocks and 74 digs. Meanwhile, Savanna Reilly has 141 kills, 17 aces, seven blocks and 69 digs, Annika Odeen has 57 kills, 18 aces, eight blocks and 60 digs, Susie Henderson has 308 assists, Brooke DeLauder has 172 digs and 209 assists, Clara Padinski has 29 blocks and Charlotte Connell has 26 blocks.
