Jaguars win in first round, but fall to La Jolla in CIF water polo quarterfinals

The Valley Center varsity boys water polo team capped a great season this week with a win in the first round of the CIF Division III playoffs, followed by a tough loss that brought the season to an end.

The No. 6 seed Jaguars advanced to the Division III quarterfinals on Wednesday with a 15–5 win over 11th- ranked La Jolla Country Day.

The Jags had a great start scoring six goals and allowing only one and backed it up in the second, scoring three goals holding LJCD scoreless to lead 9–1 at half.

Valley Center had another solid quarter scoring four more goals and allowing one to lead 13–2 heading into the fourth. The Jaguars scored two more goals in the fourth and allowing three to cruise to the big win.

“This was a great win for the guys as they executed the game plan,” head coach Kyle Kline said. “We had one of our best first quarters which set the tone for the game and we were able to follow it up throughout the rest of the game. I am extremely proud of the focus they brought to this game.”

Luke Marshall had a huge game with nine goals, and one assist. Brock Daugherty had a great game with three goals, one assist, and one exclusion. Will Russell had a solid game with one goal, two assists, one steal, and scored one penalty shot. Ryan Semon had a good game with one goal, three assists, and one block. Schaner had one steal, and one exclusion. Gavin Marcon had an awesome game with 21 goal saves, two assists, and one steal.

Then Valley Center finished off their season on Saturday in the Division III quarterfinals with a tough 15–7 loss against No. 3-ranked La Jolla. The Jags struggled in the first unable to convert on shot attempts, and allowing four goals for La Jolla. Valley Center was able to convert on a penalty shot in the second to earn one, and allowing five to trail 9–1 at halftime.

They picked it up a bit in the third scoring two more goals and allowing three to trail 12–3 heading into the fourth. The Jaguars scored four goals in the fourth but allowed three to suffer the loss. “The guys played tough against a physical La Jolla team,” Coach Kline said. “We struggled in the first half missing our shot attempts but were able to convert in the second half. We were also able to earn eight exclusions and two penalty shots.”

Luke Marshall had great game with three goals, two steals, three exclusions, and one penalty shot. David Trok had a great game with three goals, one assist, two steals, one block, and two exclusions. It was great to have Paul Schaner back in the pool after an injury, scoring one goal, one assist, one block, and three exclusions. Brock Daugherty had one assist, and four steals. Gavin Marcon had a great game with 12 goal saves, two steals, and one assist. “The boys did a great job against a solid La Jolla team,” Coach Kline added.

“This team never gives up and they continued to challenge for four quarters eventually scoring seven goals. This ends a great season for the guys with a record of 21–8, and 5–0 in league. They were the undefeated Valley League champs, and earned first place in the Fall Classic Tournament. I am extremely proud of this team for their accomplishments, and how they conduct themselves not only in the pool, but out of the water as well. Thank you to parents, faculty, and administration who came out to support the boys this season.”
