When the Valley Center varsity boys basketball team beat Mount Miguel in the Aztec Holiday Classic Tournament on Dec. 28, the Jaguars pulled their record to 6–7 with one game left in the tournament schedule before beginning league play in 2014.

With two more losses this week, the Jags are now on a losing skid that covers the last 11 games and may keep them out of the playoffs.

Valley Center hosted Del Norte on Wednesday and played a competitive game early, but couldn’t put together four quarters of solid basketball and suffered a 53–35 loss.

Behind the good hustle of Jared Gilster and a nice layup from Brad Dozier, the Jags pulled to within three of the Nighthawks, 10–7, late in the first quarter.

But Del Norte stole the ball and went coast-to-coast for a layup that finished off the quarter and left Valley Center down by five, 12–7.

The list of missed chances grew throughout the game, as Del Norte slowly expanded the lead to 29–18 at halftime, then pulled away to lead 48–27 through three quarters before coasting to the win in the fourth.

Then on Friday, the Jaguars played at Ramona and once again couldn’t capitalize on missed opportunities in taking a 78–69 loss.

With the playoffs looming, the Jaguars head into the final two games of the regular season. They have already hosted Mission Vista on Wednesday and they play the regular season finale at Orange Glen on Friday at 7 p.m.
