Fire crews from the Valley Center Fire Protection District, San Pasqual Reservation Fire Department, and CalFire battled a brush fire near Bear Valley Heights Road on the evening of Feb. 15.

“We do not know what started it,” said CalFire Battalion Chief Cristina Williamson. Air tankers were called in to fight the blaze, as well as hand crews and water tankers from the San Diego County Fire Authority and San Pasqual Volunteer Firefighters. They were able to contain the fire to approximately one acre.

“Because it burned through an old avocado grove, there were lots of mop-ups,” said Williamson. Crews first responded to the call around 5 p.m., and continued working for the next five hours to contain the hillside fire.

Two civilians tried to put out the blaze with fire extinguishers before fire crews arrived. They were both treated for smoke inhalation, and one patient was transported to Palomar Medical Center for minor burns. However, the injuries were not severe, as the patient was not sent to the burn center.

No structures were damaged in the fire.
