VC wrestling team takes second in tournament

February 27, 2014

Nothing thrills a coach like when a team steps up its performance at a key moment.

With a solid regular season concluded, the Valley Center varsity wrestling team turned up the intensity for last weekend’s CIF Division IV tournament and brought home a team runner-up trophy, as ten wrestlers finished in the top six in the event.

The Jaguars battled Mt. Miguel, Clairemont and Imperial throughout the tournament for the second-place trophy and ultimately outscored Mt. Miguel by ten points to seal the runner-up spot with 145 points.

Seniors Lorenzo Gomez and Garrett Castner led the way by clinching second place individual finishes, as Gomez was the runner-up in the 287-pound class and Castner took second in the 184-pound class.

Taking fourth in their respective weight classes were seniors Ryan Villalobos (128 pounds) and Jairo Diaz (172 pounds), along with freshman Alexander Armenta (108 pounds).

In fifth place were seniors Jorge Beltran (118 pounds), Trevor Ryan (134 pounds) and James Harvey (140 pounds), along with sophomore Andrew Navarro (122 pounds).

Finishing in sixth place was senior Matt McCaghren (197 pounds), while freshmen Brock Moffitt (147 pounds) and Joel Almeida (172 pounds) helped chip in to the team score with outstanding performances.

The wrestlers finishing in the top four qualified for this weekend’s Masters Tournament at Mission Hills High School, while the wrestlers in fifth place earned a spot as an alternate for the Masters Tournament.

In the end, head coach Wes Jones gave all the credit for the phenomenal finish to the dedication and resolve of his wrestlers.

“I believe it was due to the hard work of the boys throughout the day,” he said. “The majority of them placed higher than they where seeded in the tournament.”
