The 2014 season began the way the 2013 season ended for the Valley Center varsity softball team, as the Lady Jaguars fell to Mater Dei.

This time around, the Lady Jags fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 9–3 loss.

The Lady Crusaders jumped ahead with three runs in the bottom of the first, and though Valley Center answered with a run in the top of the second, Mater Dei added three more in the bottom of the inning to lead 6–1 through two innings.

The Lady Jags cut into the lead with two more runs in the top of the third, making the score 6–3, but the Lady Crusaders scored twice in the fifth and once more in the sixth to take the win.

Freshman Moyla Devers led the Valley Center offense with a pair of hits, while Kiana Diefenbach had an RBI triple, Nia Hutton had a double and Jasmine Contreras, Brie Dunckel and Leilani Diefenbach each had a hit.

Emma Sloman got the start and gave up six runs on seven hits in three and a third innings, though only one run was earned. Hutton took over and finished the final two and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits, with two walks.

Valley Center has a pair of home games next on the schedule, as they already hosted Vista on Wednesday and they play against Patrick Henry on Thursday at 3 p.m.
