VC boys golf team beats Escondido

March 13, 2014

Even though the season has only just begun, there’s a lot of positive things happening with the varsity boys golf team.

The Jaguars return last year’s league champion, Grant Colquhoun, along with senior Stephen Magnani and juniors Chase Becker and Jared Gonzales. Joining the team will be junior Caleb Kim, sophomore Ryan Melendrez and freshman Michael Cooper.

The Jaguars already beat Escondido in the first match of the season, but Coach Darland isn’t necessarily looking at the wins and losses this season for the signs of his team’s success.

“To me, it doesn’t matter if we lose every single match, as long as we’re shooting our best scores, that’s what we’re looking for,” he says. “This isn’t like a lot of other sports. Because it’s such a short season, you have to be ready to go right from the first day of tryouts. But this is a great group of kids, and these guys have been working hard. I think we’ll be OK.”

On top of the team’s success on the course, Coach Darland adds that the season is already off to a great start because Gonzales, who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma last fall, has been cancer-free for over a month.

“That’s the best thing about the season, no matter what else happens this year,” says Coach Darland.
