Dos Valles Garden Club offers scholarships

July 03, 2014

Dos Valles Garden Club held its Annual Awards Luncheon to present their scholarships, awards, and donations to the community on June 17 at St. Stephen Community Hall in Valley Center. The event was attended by over 100 club members, award winners, and their families.

Pauline Sechi and Marilyn Guidroz were recognized for winning awards from California Garden Clubs, Inc. (CGCI). David Rylaarsdam received the Dos Valles Garden Club Award of Appreciation for the countless hours he has contributed to the club’s activities. A special Community Appreciation award was given to Camille Martineau for his service to students at VCPUSD. The club’s Community Beautification Awards went to California Bank & Trust, the Yellow Deli, and Powerland Equipment Co.

A record number of Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl poster contest winners were chosen from local elementary schools. The nine winners were Chris Melam, Daelyn Klingler, Mae Chew, Aubrey Morales, Lilian Carpenter, Liliana Gomez, Tatum Bernet, Nadeline Curz, and Aiden Osborne. Donations of $2,500 were given to local schools and the Valley Center Library. This year, three scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded to the following students: Damian Stehly, Bresa Martin, and Victora Laird. They will be attending colleges to study conservation, horticulture, plant biology, botany, and landscape architecture.

Record community support of Dos Valles Garden Club’s five plant sales this year has made it possible for the club to provide these awards, scholarships, and donations to the community.
