Is there any better way of helping those in need then going for an early morning walk on the Heritage Trial? Probably not, so please join the seventh annual “Friends of the Poor® Walk“, which will be held on Saturday, September 13, starting at Adams Park. All proceeds from the event will directly benefit needy families in Valley Center and Pauma Valley by raising funds for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.

Walkers are asked to have their friends and family sponsor them on their walk. Some walkers walk one mile on the Heritage Trail, while other walkers may choose to walk further.

The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry is open to all families of any faith who are in need and is located in the lower parking lot at St. Stephen‘s, 31020 Cole Grade Rd, Valley Center and is open on Saturday mornings from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Summer hours from May to September 1st are 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

There are currently over 800 families registered for food. The number of families each Saturday varies. Summer time the pantry serves about 30 – 40 families, but starting in September, the numbers increase reaching over 100 by December.

Funds from the walk are used to buy beans, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta, soup and soap. In the past, the pantry has also received generous donations from various local clubs and organizations, as well as receiving the results of local food drives.

Participants for the “Friends of the Poor® Walk“ will gather at Adams Park and will be using the Heritage Trail before returning to Adams Park for refreshments and breakfast burritos. T-shirts will be issued to the first 100 walkers. The walk is sponsored by Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Valley Center.
