Filing period opens July 18 to run for public office

If you have ever thought about running for public office July 18 will be your lucky day. That’s when the filing period for running for offices in San Diego County opens. Between July 18-August 12 would be candidates will be able to gather the requisite number of signatures and file to run for the following offices in Valley Center and Pauma Valley.

Valley Center Pauma Unified School District

Don Martin and Mary Polito’s terms are ending. No word as yet whether one or both will be running for reelection. The school board seats are at large, meaning that the entire district gets to vote for them.

Valley Center Municipal Water District

Two seats will be up for election this year. The seats are Division 1 – currently held by Robert Polito, and Division 4 – currently held by Enrico Ferro, who was appointed to his seat earlier this year after Chuck Stone retired. The map above shows the division boundaries so you can determine if you are within one of them.

Valley Center Parks & Rec District

The seats of board President Marcia Townsend, Larry Glavinic and recent appointed director Carol Johnson are up for election. All three are at large seats, which means that anyone in the district can run for them.

Valley Center Community Planning Group

Eight seats are up for election on the planning group this year. They are the seats currently held by Oliver Smith, board chairman, Hans Britsch, Susan Janisch, Bill Miller, Ann Quinley, Jeana Boulos, Chris Stiedemann, who was recently appointed to the seat and Mark Jackson.

Valley Center Fire Protection District

Bill Palmer and board President Weaver Simonsen are up for reelection. The fire district is an at large district.

Qualifications

You must be at least 18 and a citizen of California, and must be a registered voter. Being convicted of certain crimes disqualifies you from running (see (Gov. Code Sec. 1021.) You must also reside in the district or division that you are running for.
