Girls’ tennis tryouts and practice set to begin

On August 8, sanctioned tryout and practice sessions for the Valley Center High girls’ tennis team will begin on the courts at Adams Park. New players are encouraged to come out and join those that are returning to the team.

Practice for the varsity will be conducted Monday through Friday from 8 to 9:30 a.m. while the junior varsity sessions will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Players are advised to wear athletic clothing and shoes and bring a racket and water. There will be a few rackets available for those that are without one.

In order to become eligible and allowed to compete, prospective players must complete an athletic clearance package that can be downloaded from the VCHS website. Once finished, the package must be returned to the VC High administration office.

These preseason practice sessions will run for two weeks. Students that can’t make these practices will be allowed to tryout at a later date.

Official tryouts are scheduled to kick off on August 15. Experienced players should turn out for the varsity while less seasoned or newer players should plan on starting at the junior varsity level.

Beginning on August 22, VC will transition over to its regular practice schedule with the jayvee squad working out from 3 to 4:30 p.m. while the varsity will take to the courts from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The coaching duties for this year’s teams will be handled by varsity/head coach Tom Helms and new J.V. coach Katie Parker.

Students and parents with any questions can either email or call Coach Helms at thelms1@att.net or 760-509-5335.
