Horn endorses Desmond for fifth district

Valley Center resident Bill Horn, who has served on the Fifth District of the Board of Supervisors for more than two decades, since 1995, earlier this week announced his pick for the man to succeed him” Jim Desmond, the mayor of San Marcos.

The election won’t be held until June of 2018, but it is already starting to heat up a bit.

In a letter that was emailed to hundreds of recipients, Horn wrote: “I am proud to announce that I have endorsed San Marcos Mayor Jim Desmond for the 5th District on the Board of Supervisors as I transition out of this office at the end of my term next year.

“Mayor Desmond shares my view that the Supervisors must maintain the fiscally conservative policies that have made San Diego County one of the best managed and financially secure local governments in the nation. Protecting the taxpayers will be his first priority.

“When I created the North County Gang Task Force, Mayor Desmond and I worked closely together, and with the support of Sheriff Bill Gore and District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, to help build a highly successful program that significantly reduced crime.

“I know that Mayor Desmond will focus his energy on the many challenges facing North County: reducing traffic congestion, ensuring that we have sensible land use policies that protect our quality of life, expanding and strengthening our library system, supporting the region’s vital agriculture industry and many other concerns.

“I am confident that Mayor Desmond will address the particular concerns of the Backcountry, one of the most critical roles of this office. The citizens of the unincorporated communities are often left out of the policy debates in the county, but I know Jim Desmond will fight hard to protect their interests.

“I am proud to support Mayor Jim Desmond for Supervisor for North County and I ask that you join me today in supporting our next County Supervisor for District 5.”

Desmond had pretty much been crowned by the San Diego Republican establishment several months ago, with most serving members on the Board of Supervisors endorsing him, and with prominent GOP bigwigs announcing their support.
