Field turf at Valley Center High School to be more precise as time has taken its toll on the synthetic grass turf field.

In a penny wise versus pound foolish scenario, trustees grappled with whether to take advantage of an eight-year warranty now in its seventh year to replace the turf at no charge or pluck down $150,000 for new turf with upgraded materials and a new eight-year warranty.

Spoiler alert, after a brief discussion, trustees went with the new going out with the old. They unanimously approved the expenditure.

Synthetic turf fields generally last around 10 years, VCPUSD chief business officer Julie Kimball said, based on a December inspection from FieldTurf, a Montreal, Canada-based synthetic turf manufacturer and distributor.

FieldTurf said the project required could reuse some field infill with taxes and laser leveling and regrading costing $25,000. They offered additional features including a football grid and maintenance equipment for around $37,000 that weren’t included in the final purchase decision.

FieldTurf said the new synthetic turf field would take about a month to install.
