SECOND ANNUAL ‘BARK FOR LIFE’ FUNDRAISER SET

The 2nd Annual Bark for Life in Valley Center will be held at Bates Nut Farm from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 19, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. The opening ceremony will kick off at 9 a.m. The event aims to tell cancer it “barked” up the wrong tree! Families and their dogs may complete a one-mile walk to honor the care-giving qualities of their canine “best friends.” Doggie games, a dress-up contest, doggie demonstrations and food will be on hand. ‘BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO’

ON STAGE AT WELK THEATRE

The Welk Theatre presents “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do,” featuring the songs of Neil Sedaka, from Aug. 7-23. Set at a Catskills resort in 1960, “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” is the sweetly comic story of Marge, who has just been left at the alter with a non-refundable honeymoon package looming over her head. After a bit of encouragement by free-spirited gal pal Lois, Marge takes Lois on her “honeymoon.” Will the hunky lead singer bring Marge out of her funk? The score showcases 18 Neil Sedaka classics, including “Where the Boys Are,” “Sweet Sixteen,” “Calendar Girl,” “Love Will Keep Us Together” and of course, the chart-topping title song.Ticket prices are $35.

CALIFORNIA CENTER FOR THE ARTS PRESENTS ‘WRITING WITH PICTURES’

The Museum at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido presents the multi-media exhibition “Writing with Pictures.” The exhibit, running now through Sept. 13, colorfully tells the story behind the creation of the picture book, why we love them, and their widening audience and role in the 21st century.

View original storybook illustrations from popular works such as “A Boy and a Jaguar,” “Stellaluna” and “The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm.” The museum at 340 N. Escondido Blvd. in Escondido is open Thursdays through Sundays. To learn more, visit artcenter.org.
