Local rancher creates natural soaps and life balance

Borden Acres offers soaps 1 for $7, 3 for $20, and 5 for $30. Pre-made gift sets range from $18-$25. Local delivery is available.

For local farmer, Danielle Borden, owner of Borden Acres, a local goat milk soap maker and purveyor of natural, handcrafted goat milk soaps, lotions, and face creams, the secret to life is simple, “Love your family, and love what you do.”
Borden, an entrepreneur who started Borden Acres soap-making in 2018, loves her boutique line of all-natural products, but never dreamed this would be the direction her life would take. “I studied Public Administration at San Diego State University,” she said. “When I graduated from San Diego State in 2008, never in a million years did I think I would be a goat milk soap maker, but here I am and I wouldn’t change anything.”
Borden started the business part out of curiosity, part necessity. “Our oldest, Milo, has always struggled with eczema and sensitive skin, she said. “We tried a lot of products, but wanted to stay on the simple and natural path,” she added. “That’s when we dis-covered that goat’s milk canbe very helpful with calming and treating skin ailments.” Borden explained.

SIMPLY NATURAL
Borden Acres focuses on natural, handmade, small-batch goat milk soaps, made from goat milk produced on the family farm. “When our Nigerian Dwarf goats are in milk, we use it to feed our family and to make our products,” explained Borden.
The company, which markets their lotions, facial care, body butters, bath soaks, and lip balm products on bordenacres.etsy.com, also sells at select local stores including Temecula’s Reclaimed at Main Street Market in Old Town, and at Local Niche in Carlsbad and Mission Valley. Borden offered her line at local farmers markets and events until COVID-19 restrictions hit. “Many of my usual event and fair outlets to sell in the community were cancelled,” she said.

NOURISHING BENEFITS
“Goat’s milk soap is very different from regular soap,’’ Borden stated. “It is creamy and smooth with unique nourishing properties that make it a great ingredient to add to any-thing that touches your skin, she described. “All our products are made with all-natural oils, butters, and one hundred percent pure essential oils or fragrance,” Borden con-tinued. “Our soaps are produced using the cold process method and then cured for six weeks to produce a mild, skin-nourishing soap that your skin will love.”
According to Borden, goat’s milk is known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. “It helps remove dead skin cells to reveal the new, healthy skin underneath, she shared. “It’s loaded with alpha hydroxy acids (specifically, lactic acid) which helps aid in skin rejuvenation,” she continued. Borden shared that the milk soothes irritating conditions such as acne, eczema, and rosacea, and adds vitamins, minerals to the skin.

ECO-FRIENDLY
“Our commitment to this earth is to be as eco-friendly as we can,” Borden said. “All of our soaps are packaged in one hundred percent compostable seed boxes that can be planted into the earth for flowers to grow. All of our other products are packaged in reusable glass or metal. No one-time use plastics. When we ship, we purchase recycled shipping products or reuse packaging from our own received shipments. We do our best to limit waste, reuse, and recycle.”

WORK-LIFE BALANCE
Borden, who puts “family first,” treasures the flexibility to do what she loves. “During lockdown, we went outside every day, and we spent our time outdoors enjoying the animals,” she said. “If I’m not in the soap studio, you can find us hanging with the herd, collecting eggs, and tending to the garden”, Borden said. Her motto for happiness? One that bears repeating, “ Go Outside. Get Dirty. Wash. Repeat.”
